All throughout high school I dreamed of becoming one of the foreign exchange students who got to go to Mexico.
Though I never got the chance to pursue that dream, sometimes I still wish I could have been a exchange student because I really think that I could have learned so much through the travel.
One of the main reasons that I was never called upon to be among the exchange students was because my parents just were simply terrified with the idea of having me go off to live in Mexico with people they new nothing about. It just was not a "risk" they were willing to take.
So for a long time, foreign exchange students were mostly characters in movies for me. I would sit and daydream about becoming a exchange student the way some kids daydream about being a famous Hollywood movie star or a professional athlete. The ability to go to far away lands was not something that was really attainable for me.
Now that I think about it, it definitely would not have worked out very well. Foreign exchange students typically trade places and I just can’t imagine my mother trying to deal with a new person who more than likely spoke no English.
However, some families do take in foreign exchange students without sending their own to the other country. These host families would have been great when I was a teen because I could have traveled without being a burden to my own family. The opportunity was probably available back then but I just didn’t know about it.
Becoming a host affords you the opportunity to touch a young person’s life. You will learn about the visitor’s culture and you will serve as a nurturing teacher as well.
Sometimes I still dream of being one of the foreign exchange students that I have seen in movies. I may even help a young student fulfill her dream of visiting another country by hosting foreign exchange students myself.
