alifornia is the country’s third largest state in area and the largest state in population,
with its coastline stretching down the southern half of the U.S.
California borders the Mexican state of Baja California, the Pacific Ocean, Oregon, Nevada and Arizona. The state’s landscape is as spectacular as it is diverse with hot deserts, tall mountains, scenic coastlines and forests of towering redwoods.
Spain colonized California in the late 1700s, but lost the area to Mexico during the Mexican War of Independence (1810-21). Shortly thereafter, Mexico lost the territory to the United States after the Mexican-American War (1846-1848).
California became the 31st state of the United States in 1850.
Today, the majority of Californians are white. Hispanics make up over one-third of the population followed by Asians, Blacks, and Native Americans. However, because of their high birth rate and high levels of immigration from Latin America, Hispanics are predicted to become majority in the state around 2040.
As of 2000, 60.5% of California residents age 5 and older speak English at home and 25.8% speak Spanish. Chinese is the third most spoken language at 2.6%, followed by Tagalog at 2.0% and Vietnamese at 1.3%.
Since 1986, the California Constitution has specified that English is the common and official language of the state. Nevertheless, Spanish speakers are in great demand in California.
As a direct result, Spanish language schools in California are of prime importance.
